Fusion and funk have become classic styles: always evolving and always-in demand. After the huge success of last year’s funk workshop, we had to offer an encore session. This inDepth Jazz Clinic digs into classic jazz funk and fusion. Our faculty have toured and recorded with some of the greatest contemporary funk and fusion masters. Don’t miss this chance to learn and play with them,

Workshop Summary
Build your chops and repertoire covering tunes by greats like Eddie Harris, Freddie Hubbard and Herbie Hancock. “Cold Duck Time “ is classic funk/fusion by jazz saxophonist Eddie Harris. His music is back on the scene thanks to folks like The Bad Plus and John Scofield. “Red Clay” is THE rock/fusion standard by jazz trumpeter Freddie Hubbard. If you learn one fusion tune, this should be it. “Cantaloupe Island” is a Herbie Hancock gem. The intro piano line has been sampled and used by many hip-hop and rap artists, and the infectious groove has paved the way for hundreds of songs of this ilk. This is a great tune to get into groove and rhythmic soloing.

Faculty
This is one of our hottest line-ups ever. Learn and play with Jeff Antoniuk, sax; Frank Russo, drums; Wayne Wilentz, keyboards and two great players new to our program.

Bassist Mike Pope has worked with Michael and Randy Brecker, Mike Stern and Joe Lovano and toured with Chick Corea's Elektric Band and David Sanborn. Boston guitarist Steve Rochinski has played with numerous greats. Steve records for Germany’s leading jazz guitar label, Jardis Records. His books and recordings are sold internationally. Schedule

Get the inside scoop through classes, jams and demonstration. Here's the workshop schedule:

Intro: Meet your teachers. They'll start by playing a few songs they've played on stages all over the world. Then it’s your turn!

1. One Hour Group Class - We'll discuss the elements of fusion music both philosophically and musically. Then we’ll add the rhythmic components, piece by piece, to build the sound, using two classic fusion styles as examples (funk/rock and Latin). Our instructors will model what you'll do in the final class.

2. One Hour Class - Instrument Specific Masterclass. Guitar, bass, drums, keyboards and horns will break into groups. See how your instrument contributes to the sound and gain valuable insight as to how to achieve it.

3. Small Groups - Spend two hours playing in small combos grouped by ability level. Expand your feel for the style, rhythm and harmony of our repertoire.
