The Art of the Trio

(For Instrumentalists)

Sunday, March 21, 2010
1 – 5:30 PM, Tuition: $165

Location: Mt. Vernon Place United Methodist Church
900 Massachusetts Ave., NW, Washington DC 20001

The jazz trio offers loads of opportunities for playing out and earning a good paycheck at the end of the evening. After many requests, we're offering a practical workshop on this intimate jazz group. Trio gigs can be challenging and yield extraordinary music. They can also be boring and routine. Find out how to make the most of a trio from one of the best in the business. Expand your skills as a bandleader or sideman.

Our core faculty for the clinic is the world celebrated DIVA Trio from New York City. They recently played to a standing room only audience at the Blue Note and have been tearing it up at the Dizzy's Club Coca Cola! They're in demand in Europe and the US. You'll learn and play with our faculty throughout the clinic. Bring your axe!

Workshop Summary
The workshop will give instrument-specific ideas you need to enhance your trio playing and provide group instruction on how to function as a three-part whole. This isn't a six-piece band with less players - it's a different bag!

ALL instruments are welcome! We'll work with numerous trio settings from the classic piano trio to the Sonny Rollins trio (horn/bass/drums), to drummer less trios and more. Don't miss this rare opportunity to address this rich tradition.

Faculty:  Group leader and percussionist Sherrie Maricle, Ph.D. performs with the New York Pops and is their director of education. She has led the The DIVA Jazz Orchestra and other ensembles at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Tanglewood, The Kennedy Center and many jazz festivals. Bassist Jennifer Leitham and pianist Tomoko Ohno will also share their virtuosity. Joining them is one of the finest guitar trio players on the East Coast, Steve Herberman. Saxophonist Jeff Antoniuk rounds out the teaching team.

Register today. Since we do a lot of playing at our clinics and there are a limited spots for each instrument, they fill up fast. To enroll call 410-295-6691 or visit the Registration page of www.indepthjazz.com

Transcription & Analysis: The Keys to Great Soloing

Location: 49 West Café

Learn from the jazz greats!

Let their memorable solos inform your own playing and improvising. This “Transcribing & Analysis” Clinic will help you get started. You’ll acquire deep listening skills and get help breaking down what you hear. The result: replace boring solos with memorable musical statements.

Just as an athlete studies game tapes to raise the bar on their performance, good jazz players study and transcribe the great solos they’ve heard. It empowers them to create their own unique sound.

Transcription helps you discover cool elements in solos you listen to. Learn how something that sounds complicated seems simpler when you break it down. Need new ideas? Immerse yourself in this afternoon clinic and come out ready to play or sing your best music ever. Every jazz and rock teacher says the same thing, and all the books and DVD’s say it too: “You have to transcribe great solos to become a better player."

It's hard to know where to start and just what to do, but we’re here to help. Get ready for an afternoon of fun, music and useful information.

How You’ll Spend the Afternoon

Our workshop has three sections:

1. We’ll talk about how to transcribe and what tools to use. Learn the tricks of the trade and how to use your strengths and minimize your musical shortcomings as you work.

2. Clinic leader Jeff Antoniuk will perform and analyze two jazz solos. Closely following a class he developed and teaches at Towson University, he’ll outline what to look for when playing and analyzing a solo. Harmony, texture, tone, chord substitutions, melodic devices and motivic devices are some of the areas to be addressed.

3. Finally, three workshop participants will have the opportunity to present a solo to the class. If you would like to be considered, please let us know in advance! We’ll work through it as a group, and analyze the solo together, to gain a better understanding of what to look for in your transcriptions and improvised solos.

You will leave the workshop with FIVE analyzed transcriptions (two from Jeff, three from clinic participants). This alone is worth the price of admission!

The “Transcribing Clinic” is limited to 20 participants, so enroll early. The registration deadline is April 9. To enroll call 410-295-6691 or visit the Registration page of www.indepthjazz.com

Old School Funk: James Brown & Beyond
(Vocalists & Instrumentalists)

Saturday, May 1, 2010
1 – 5:30pm, Tuition: $165

Location: Saint Mark Presbyterian Church
10701 Old Georgetown Road, Rockville, MD

Dust off your funk chops and prepare to GROOVE like you mean it.

James Brown, Tower of Power, Average White Band – the power and musical range of these bands is legendary. This is good-time music, but it is studied intensely in conservatories and universities around the world. Join us for a dive into the deep end of the groove. VOCALISTS and INSTRUMENTALISTS will learn important funk techniques. We’ll cover classic chord voicing and rhythm patterns, bass lines and drum grooves and ideas about vocal and horn tone and articulation. You’ll study with funk/R&B masters, and step up your game. Take your new ideas from the clinic back to your weekend band or jazz group and play MORE CONVINCINGLY in the this style.

Faculty: David Dyson is one of the most in demand bassists on the planet. He and Jeff Antoniuk are the core of our faculty. David has been touring the world for years with Grammy winning artists ranging from New Kids On The Block and Walter Beasley to Chico Freeman and Me'Shell N'degeocello. As we round out our faculty, expect more major recording artists and names from national acts. There are major surprises in store!

Don’t miss the "Old School Funk" workshop. Space is limited to 35 participants. Enrollment deadline is April 30, 2010. To enroll call 410-295-6691 or visit the Registration page of www.indepthjazz.com
