Funk / R&B Workshop - Fee $165

This is the workshop you’ve been WAITING FOR!

Our faculty will devote the afternoon to instrumental funk and R&B styles from some of the greatest names in popular music. Dave Sanborn, Herbie Hancock, The Average White Band, Maceo Parker and Jaco Pastorious will provide our repertoire, and YOU will provide the funk!

Through classes, jam sessions and performances with local and national players, you'll learn how to REALLY play this ever popular music. Our faculty has backed such greats as Ray Charles, Marcus Miller, Najee, Maysa and Percy Sledge.

Maryland Summer Jazz/inDepth

Vocal Jazz Clinic    fee: $350 per session

After three years of successful summer instrumental workshops, Maryland Summer Jazz is proud to offer the first Vocal Jazz Sessions in 2008! Each session is two full days of vocal jazz in the larger context of Maryland Summer Jazz. You will interact with over 50 adult musicians, including many of the finest recording artists and educators in the country.

Whether you are an “in the shower singer” or a semi-pro, we have a spot for you. We will address vocal technique, jazz style, theory and scatting jazz solos. You'll have plenty of time every day to sing, network with other jazz enthusiasts and enjoy our professionally catered lunches! March 29, 2008 Vocal Jazz Clinic

Whether you are an “in the shower singer” or out there gigging, you’ll want to attend this special vocal clinic. You will attend three classes, covering everything from breathing and intonation to jazz theory and scatting. Then, our fourth and final class puts you in a small group singing situation where you will get to strut your stuff with our top-call pianists. Classes are grouped according to ability level, so the Vocal Jazz Clinic is perfect for beginners to semi-pros.

December 29, 2007 Winter Tune-up Session

The perfect chance to do some JAZZ PLAYING during the winter holidays.

You will attend two classes, 1) Instrument-specific class on “How To Practice” and 2) “Style and Song Analysis.” Then we’ll spend a few hours putting your new skills to work playing in a group. We’ll focus on six classic tunes by Freddie Hubbard, Bill Evans, Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane. We’ll also revisit a couple of the great tunes we played at Maryland Summer Jazz 2007.

Sept. 29, 2007 Guitar, Piano and Theory

Clinic

Beginner and intermediate levels of jazz instruction for the pianist and guitarist.

You will attend three classes during the day - a theory class, a Guitar or Piano class, and a Final Session class. Or, mix and match. Take two theory classes or two piano classes.
